Today, January 3rd 2017, marks the 8th year since the beginning of the Bitcoin blockchain. Satoshi Nakamoto’s “Genesis block,” the first block in the blockchain, was mined on January 3rd, 2009. The block contained the text “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks” which was a newspaper headline from the British publication The Times.
The whitepaper for Bitcoin, which some consider Bitcoin’s “birthday,” was posted a few months earlier, in November 2008.
Bitcoin has been continuously online and largely functioning without issue for the entirety of its lifespan.
Bitcoin is currently trading at $1,020.
Happy Birthday, Bitcoin! Here’s to many more successful years!
